Mavrouda

Mavrouda (or Mavroudi) presents a unique case in Greek ampelography, as the name literally translates to "black grape" and does not refer to a single, genetically distinct variety. Instead, it is an umbrella term historically used by local farmers across various regions of Greece to describe several unrelated, dark-skinned grapevines.

Generally speaking, grapes bearing the Mavrouda name are prized for their intense, deeply concentrated dark color. Because they tend to offer robust tannins and prominent dark fruit flavors, they are most frequently utilized by winemakers in blends to add color depth, strong structure, and a fuller body to the final wine.
