Mavrodafni
Mavrodafni, translating to "black laurel," is arguably the most famous of the four, historically tied to the regions of Patras and Kefalonia. For decades, it has been globally recognized for its exceptional sweet, fortified dessert wines, which are aged in oak barrels to develop rich, complex layers of raisins, dried plums, nuts, and dark chocolate.
However, a modern winemaking revolution has revealed a completely different side of this dark, thick-skinned grape. Today, many top Greek producers are crafting outstanding dry red Mavrodafni wines that are robust, highly structured, and packed with dark fruit and botanical notes, showcasing incredible character and aging potential.
